CLT – Cross Laminated Timber

The CLT construction system is relatively new, but we have recognized its qualities and advantages, and we use it to successfully build prefabricated houses, sanitary cells and multi-residential buildings.

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is an innovative building material made from glued wood stacked in cross-ply layers, usually in odd numbers, and glued under pressure to form a single wooden element with exceptional load-bearing capacity in all directions.

The CLT construction system has become very popular in recent years due to the numerous advantages it offers: speed of construction, accuracy in cost estimation, energy efficiency, excellent performance in the event of seismic events, along with the aspect of sustainability and the lower environmental impact of wood compared to other building materials.

For these and other reasons, CLT is increasingly a natural choice in construction.

Radman Homes’ many years of experience with various CLT panel and fastener manufacturers lead to new solutions to maximize the effect of the combination of design, functionality and mechanical fasteners. CLT allows for a range of innovative architectural possibilities, given its strength-to-weight ratio, versatility and buildability.

A house built from CLT — combined with wood fiber insulation, wood siding, wood window and door frames, and wood doors — means people can enjoy a clean wood home that is healthy for its occupants and also a healthy choice for the planet.

Attention to detail at Radman Homes

The durability of wood is closely related to protection against water . Thus, we pay special attention to the proper installation of all insulation and membranes that are necessary to prevent external infiltration, the arrival of moisture from the ground and unsatisfactory sealing.

1. Humidity due to capillary action

2. Lateral protection: Bitumen membranes, bitumen bands

3. Vertical protection: Continuous waterproof covers, bitumen and butyl tapes

Is CLT construction expensive?

Does CLT construction cost more than conventional alternatives like concrete and steel? The answer can depend on many factors, including exactly what you include in your cost comparison and where you plan to build.

Simply comparing the base price of CLT to other materials may not give the full picture, especially for larger buildings. This is because while the material cost of CLT can sometimes be higher than steel or concrete, CLT can save money in other areas. For example, CLT is a lighter form of construction, meaning that it is possible to use simpler foundations.

The basis for sustainable construction

Nearly zero-energy houses are now a standard defined by requirements at the European Union level, as well as in Croatia. They must use minimal additional energy for their operation, or as much as possible use energy obtained from renewable energy sources. With new technologies, fastening systems and waterproofing, CLT prefabricated systems have gained a new dimension, reaching exceptional levels of quality and performance.

This is especially true in the heating sector which, thanks to the use of extremely effective air, water and wind tightness solutions, represents a real guarantee of improved living comfort.
